gatehampton road, goring

Flora House Exterior_008.jpg

gatehampton road is a greenfield site on the edge of goring, held in reserve in case other allocated sites failed to deliver. when one did, the opportunity opened, but in an area of outstanding natural beauty (now a national landscape) and a village where every new home is closely scrutinised.

working with nexus planning, the parish council and local residents, we shaped a scheme of around 14 family homes that responds to its landscape. it uses modest forms, local materials and a drainage strategy designed around the chalk from the outset.

the planning case starts long before the application.

reserve sites only come forward when the timing and the argument are right. being ready, with a strong strategy, local support and a design that answers the landscape, is what turns a fallback site into a consented scheme.

03

drainage first

goring sits on chalk, where water behaves differently. we set a suds strategy (sustainable drainage systems, which manage rainwater on site) early, so drainage shaped the layout rather than being squeezed in at the end.

02

built for the landscape

one-and-a-half-storey homes keep rooflines low within the protected landscape. local brick and clay tiles tie them to the village, with a contemporary twist that stops them feeling like pastiche.

01

seizing the moment

when another allocated site failed to come forward, we helped our client make the case that gatehampton road should take its place, backed by a clear planning strategy with nexus planning.
