calcot park golf club, berkshire

calcot park is a historic golf club set in 18th-century parkland beside a listed mansion, with a course laid out by the celebrated golf architect harry colt. its ageing clubhouse no longer suited how members, families and visitors want to use a club today. we assembled a team, prepared a fully costed appraisal and won the commission through a competitive bid.
rather than simply replace the building, we started by asking how a modern golf club should work. our design brings together bars, a restaurant, function space and golf training rooms, with much of the accommodation set below ground to keep the building low and discreet in its historic setting.
design the club, not just the clubhouse.
a clubhouse is a business as much as a building. understanding how it earns its income, from weddings and events to coaching and dining, shapes every decision about the design and gives the club a future beyond golf.
03
consulting in vr
during the covid lockdowns, members explored the design in virtual reality on their own phones. it kept the consultation going when meetings were impossible and gave every member a clear picture of the proposals.
02
quiet beside a mansion
the design is a sleek but subtle addition to the historic parkland. changing rooms, training and conference spaces sit below ground, and a sedum roof (a planted green roof) and solar panels help it blend into the landscape.
01
a club for everyone
weddings, events, dining and a sports bar sit alongside the golf, so the building is busy all week, not just on competition days. flexible spaces let the club switch between members' days and public events.
