single-storey home extension, berkshire

the brief from family home owners in bradfield southend was to change how the ground floor works day to day, not simply to add floor area. a single-storey rear extension now brings kitchen, dining and living together in one room that opens straight onto the garden terrace.

it's a small project, but it got the same care as a new building: a clear brick form, carefully placed glazing and a direct link between house and garden. the result has changed how the family use the whole house.

even modest extensions can be aspirational.

most homeowners are not starting from a blank site. they want the house they already love to work harder for them. a well-judged extension can do that, and it does not need to be large to make a real difference to everyday family life.

inside and outside

wide sliding doors open most of the rear wall onto a pale stone terrace. in summer the kitchen and garden become one space. in winter the glazing keeps the room bright and connected to the planting beyond.

02

brick with purpose

we chose a red multi brick to sit comfortably alongside the existing house and used it to form a simple, crisp volume. a parapet with a slim dark coping hides the flat roof, so the extension reads as solid masonry rather than an add-on.

01

one room, many uses

the new room combines cooking, dining and relaxing without losing a sense of order. the kitchen sits at the back, the dining table at the centre and the seating at the garden edge, so the family can be together while doing different things.
