160 Castle Hill is the only grade II* listed house in Reading Borough. It has historic links back to a former Inn “The King’s Arms” and was then owned by the locally renowned Jesse family. Colony were appointed to assist the new owner in correcting unauthorised building work which put the building and its owner in a dangerous position. Colony applied their extensive experience of conservation work and diplomacy with Reading Borough Council’s conservation officer and took a leading role in correcting past mistakes. The works included roof repairs to halt water ingress, splicing of structural member, lime plasterwork, installation of a lime-based heated floor screed,, panelling repairs, and more. Original cornices that had been damaged and removed were copied and repaired, and the historic fabric of the building was made sound for the long-term sustainable future. Colony managed the process to avoid the owner suffering enforcement action whilst also ensuring the building was adapted to accommodate their needs as a modern family home.
